Website help decide what armor to wear and how to get it ( Every exotic set on every race and sex )

I found it frustratingly difficult to find pictures of all the exotic armor sets, and then how to get said armor sets. I would often look up stats on gw2db and then check out any info on the armor in the wiki. Often the wiki didn't have any pictures of they were for a race other than my own. So I put together this website to hopefully centralize a lot of that info. I took screen shots of all the exotic sets on every race and sex and put in useful information about their stats and how to acquire the armor sets. Hope this is helpful to someone else because it took way longer than I expected to put it all together!

Semi casual Guide for gearing lvl 80

I say semi casual guide because there is no intense farming required but if doing it casually it will take probably a month get your full first exotic gear set.
Preliminary 80 set will take a day maybe a few more at most. Also just to add, almost everything in this game gear wise can be gained by just doing which parts you find fun.

Phase 1
So you just hit 80 and you need some gear, first for this guide you need 2-4 gold which you should have by the time you hit 80. If you don’t go do some map completions selling all the stuff it should only take 2-4 maps to get 1-2 gold.
Second thing you need to do is find a build and spec. Look around find something that fits your class and style. From your build you will want to find your 3 main stats are that go with the build. Quick break down is every gear has 1 main stat and 2 secondary stats.
Armor
First gear you want to get is your lvl 80 rares and you want to buy them off AH for about 20 silver each, costing around 1.2g for your armor. Also looking into lvl 78 exotics is not a bad idea they are a little more expensive but significantly cheaper than lvl 80 exotics the stats are more limited though.
Jewelry
Buy masterwork lvl 80 jewelry they are about 2 silver each and will be good enough for starting. Costing around 10-15 silver for a full set. Weapons Regardless of the stats I recommend lvl 78 exotics just for the base damage, if you really think the stats will help you more then get the lvl 80 rares. These should be around 50 silver to a gold.
*Runes, don’t go nuts here try to get some that give your stat you want. Just use major’s to save money at the moment. Use the same idea with sigils.
Depending on your weapons it will run about 2-4 gold to get this setup and you are ready to go.

Phase 2
Now you need your full exotic gear set.
First never buy exotic armor on the TP you will get it through playing the game. Then what do you spend your money on? Jewelry
Exotic jewelry is what you want to save up for getting, just buy it off the AH it will cost around 10-15g for a full set. It will take a bit to get but it should be the only thing your spending your money on.
*Armor The armor you need can be gained through almost any method of play.
Dungeon tokens - gained by doing dungeons (don’t need to grind just run 1 or 2 wings a day. 23 days for 1 wing a day, 12 for 2 wings a day, 8 for 3 wings a day)
Karma – gained by doing events and WvW (karma merchants are in PvE areas) This one will take the longest, but if you don't want to worry about other stuff you can do this method it is about 42k karma per piece.
WvW tokens – gained by doing WvW (only power toughness vit gear, this also includes jewelry) This one also takes a long time because you have to be better than other people.
Crafting/gathering – gained by gathering and crafting it, kind of exploring also
Money – if you like farming or TP stuff, or just buying gold from exchange (I put this here even though it’s not what the guide is about)
So for your armor find the stats and do what you want to this will take some time but it should be fun to do, your preliminary gear will be strong enough to keep you competitive.
*Weapons: Weapons are basically the same as above but I recommend buying some after you get your jewelry set, also you can use mystic forge recipes for some slightly cheaper ones. This is also why I recommend getting the lvl 78 exotics, it means you can hold off getting your weapons until last.
Runes: buy them or use dungeon tokens, not a whole lot you can do here. Same with sigils

Phase 3
Repeat 2 for more specs gear sets and characters.

Crafting level 1-80 FULL GUIDE

30g Total Cost full mat list inside separated by craft.

So today I decided I was going to level a new char 1-80 through crafting. I suggest crafting in Rata Sum as it's very central to the trade post. The tabs are the order in which I did my crafting. Not all crafts go to 400. A couple stop at 350 and some at 375. I only finish the 375-400 tier if it's cheap to do so. I.e. the cost per craft is ~6-7s or less. I.e. Jewelcrafting 375-400 IS NOT worth it at all. This guide will tell you everything that you need to purchase from the trade broker in order to get to level 80. Broken down per craft. For every single craft I focused on upgrade components. Sigils and Runes are the cheapest route for nearly all crafts. Jewelcrafting obviously doesn't apply, and for Artificing potions are the cheapest route. I will post links to those guides below as well.
http://www.gw2db.com to look up what mats for each upgrade component to make for each craft. If I don't post a guide know that I use upgrade components other than for each tier. Make sure you are either vendoring or selling items back on the TP when you are done. You can recover up to 3g from some crafts.
Full time 1-80 is less than 8 hours.

Level 80 Exotic Armor Calculator and Armor Lists

EDIT: I made the whole thing protected. If you want to try the calculator you have to make a copy (File->Make a copy). Once you have a copy you should be able to edit the dropdown boxes (the Primary/Secondary/Secondary column) and all of the stats will update for you.
EDIT2: I made everything but the dropdowns protected. You can change those on the main sheet now, but it's still easier if you make a copy.
EDIT3: I made several copies of the calculator page. If someone is currently editing one, try a different one so you aren't fighting each other.
After spending a bunch of time looking around at all the different armor sets I decided I needed a better way to pick and choose my armor. I tossed together this spreadsheet calculator that has dropdown boxes with all of the stat combinations. When you select a stat setup for a slot it updates the table with the exact stats for that piece, and keeps a running total of your stats from armor at the bottom.
There are also tabs at the bottom with tables listing all of the exotic armor sets (that I know about), where they come from, and what the Primary/Secondary stats are. The best thing to do is use the calculator to figure out which stat setup you want to go with, then cross reference that with the other tabs to figure out where you can get armors with the stats you want. Eventually I would like to have it automatically cross reference the other sheets and list the armor pieces that match your selections on the calculator as well.

How-To: Flip Jump

Simply by pressing Jump + Dodge (+ Direction) at the exact same time. The timing may take a while to soak in, but it's consistent and honestly - it's way more sexy than the poor kid's dodge. You can also flip over any Asura, which is finely dishonest and cool.
The metagame about it is that it allows you to jump slightly farther due to the positive speed boost from the dodge mechanic - which is naturally handy in many places and also in combat mode (making the jumps in battleground puzzles under attack etc.).

Current world rankings

Starting on September 1 we began using the results of the 24 hour WvW matches to begin rematching worlds using our matchmatching system. We needed to fix a few bugs with the matchmaking server in the first few days which is why our data starts at that point.
Below are the current up to date rankings for all worlds. At some point we would like to deliver this data in a much better format but for now we just want to get the data out there for everyone to take a look at.
I am still trying to format the results of the 24 hour matches so I can start posting them here as well, but right now I have an excel table with lots of columns that I need to convert over and it’s not playing nice. Hopefully I can post them sometime in the next few days. I’ll try to update this thread with current rankings whenever possible.

Magic Find FAQ

FAQ:
Q: How do I go about getting Magic Find?
A: The easiest and cheapest way is to buy/make magic find food.
Omnomberry Bar Is currently my favorite food to use. Another option is Chocolate Omnomberry Cream as it provides 40% magic find but it is only while you have a boon and it also does not provide increased gold gain so it is inferior for farming.
A more expensive but permanent way to get magic find is through equipment and upgrades.
Runes
To my knowledge there are 4 Runes that provide magic find, and 1 Sigil that provides magic find: (Please note that an effective way to get more magic find is to stack 5 of one type and 1 of another, giving 60% rather than 50% magic find.)
Equipment
Magic find armor is most easily obtained by having it crafted or buying it, note that the former is cheaper and you need only ask the crafter for the mats. Note that weapons are made from similar materials and called by the same prefixes.
The prefix is "Explorer's", providing Magic Find, Power, and Precision, and they require a tier of the claw fine crafting material depending on your level in addition to other materials. You can have it made in whatever rarity your budget allows, at level 80 you could probably obtain a entire Masterwork set for under a gold if you buy the materials yourself and get a friend to make it for you/make it yourself. The exotic set is considerably more expensive as it requires 5 ecto a piece in addition to the highier tier materials.
If that isn't your speed you could look for armor with the prefix "Traveler's" as that provides Condition Damage, Power, and Magic Find.
For Rings/Accessories/Necklaces you are looking for items with the prefix "Opal" and it also provides Magic Find/Power/Precision. Once again buy the set that fits your budget as the difference in stats between rarities is small.
Q: How does Magic Find work?
A: Magic find increases the chance you obtain highier rarity items. It works on getting crafting materials. It works on getting Blues(Fine)/Greens(Masterwork)/Yellows(Rare) from mobs.
It is believed that all your bonuses to the stats are added up and that modifies the drop tables. So if you have 2 bonuses of 50% magic find for example you would end up with 100% magic find. So if a mob had a 5% to drop a 'fine' quality crafting ingredient or piece of equipment that chance would be doubled to 10%. I must caution that this is not fact and still being tested, because current smaller tests seem to indicate that magic find is actually more effective that what is described above as this small sample seems to indicate:
Level 40~ skales.
50 kill sample - 0% MF - 6/50 dropped bloods.
50 kill sample - 20% MF - 11/50 dropped bloods.
50 kill sample - 63% MF - 21/50 dropped bloods.
Data from Shantarr.
Q: Is it worth it?
A: If you plan on killing things yes, a thousand times yes. Even spending gold on theOmnomberry Bar just to go out and farm for for a while is extremely worth it. You'll easily make back and probably even double/triple the 1-5 silver the food cost you just through the 40% increased gold alone. The 30% magic find is a massive boost for something that is already effectively free at worst and otherwise makes you money.

Introducing Guild Wars 2 Combat Mode

EDIT 3 : MAKE SURE GUILD WARS 2 IS SET TO WINDOWED FULLSCREEN (via the in game options menu)
Guild Wars 2 Combat Mode
Toggle Combat Mode on and off with any key you choose. Combat Mode transforms Guild Wars 2 movement and targeting into that of a true action game. The cursor becomes a fixed crosshair (of your choice) at the center of the screen. Moving the mouse now turns your character and camera (as if the right button was held, like a 3rd person shooter). Right Click becomes anything you want; Dodge? Weapon Swap? Whatever you choose.
Current Features:
  • Crosshair, with crosshair targeting
  • Lots of crosshair choices, with easily customizable styles, sizes and colours (beta currently only has 3)
  • No more need to hold Right Click to turn the camera
  • Eliminates the need to TAB target
  • The normal manual method of targeting makes it impossible to turn, strafe and mouse target at the same time. Combat Mode allows you to perform all 3 easily at the same time
  • Changes the Right Click to another action; Dodge, spell, weapon swap, etc
  • Seamless intergration with GW2. Opening panels such as Inventory and Hero Panel will switch you out of Combat Mode
  • Easy to install and use, very low performance impact, if any at all
  • Useful for disabled and RSI inflicted gamers
  • Simple to keep up to date with a version check built in (website not up until september 15)
I hope you enjoy
How Combat Mode came about: I suffer from RSI and have always needed something to toggle Right Click look in games. I figured this would be useful to a lot of RSI sufferers and disabled gamers. I had no plans to release it publicly, until I saw someone else on Reddit had done a similar project and it had got some interest.
I immediately contacted JayceMJ to see if he would allow me to use parts of his script in future versions of mine, and he was pleased. I worked on making the script useful for everyone, while still maintaining design choices that would cater to the RSI and disabled gamers I was originally aiming for.
EDIT1: Forgot to mention, it wont hold down the right mouse button if activated over a panel such as inventory or hero screen. close all panels before toggling it on. Also, people are reporting a bug that causes the right click to sometimes be held outside of the game. This will be addressed, for now simply toggle it off with whatever key you have assigned (default: TAB)
EDIT2: I will screenshot Arena nets confirmation of this mod being legal to use after the official reply.

Engineer Guide: Tough Bomberman

Yesterday, after I raped by entire island of risen mobs I've sold my all damage gear and purchased power, toughness and precision gear. I rearranged my traits and after hours of theorizing and experimenting in mists I've come up with this build: Build!.
After using my new build in Orr areas and Far Shiverpeaks I've concluded that I wasn't really playing engineer until now. This build is cure for every single problem of Engineers.

Damage It pulls more damage than any possible combination of weapon set, elixir/flamethrower gun or turret. You will forget that you have weapons at all when you get used to bombs and grenades. Use fast-ground targeting for Grenade Kit. It will feel like hand cannon when you get used to it. I've been thinking that my previous build specialized on kiting and applying condition until now but bomb-grenade kits have access to more condition (only lack fear and weakness) and they can offer wide range of control or kiting opportunity. You will have double chill, blind, cripple, immobilizing skills, endless burn and bleed stacks and 3 fields of poison that will melt your foes in seconds. One single grenade deals 600-700 direct damage and you throw 3 when you take Grenadier skill. In total you will deal around 1800 non-critical damage with just Throw Grenade skill. Now figure how can any of weapon set do that much damage with one shot.

Survival Before going on survival opportunities in this build I have to say that WoW-diseased classic mmo players will suffer while learning the mechanics of Guild Wars 2. We all learning, each day, that something we have been doing in other mmo's is not even an option in Guild Wars 2. I got used to gw2 combat, event system or other primary features quickly in BWE tests but some other things come up at higher levels. Survival stats and gear are one of these things. I haven't played any mmo for 2 years but I instinctively collected damage gear like I will never have problem with staying alive. I think we all do have problem with it. You can't survive just with your dodge and control skills. You have to stack at least one of the toughness, vitality or healing power stats to level up safely. I did that mistake and many people are doing it right now but people will learn soon that survival gear is important. I think people still think that survival gear is for tanks even they do well know there is no tank role. It is a bad habit from classic mmo's.
Engineer should stack toughness as top priority stat for survival. I purchased Knight (Power/Precision Condition Damage/Toughness) armor but I think Rabid (Toughness/Precision/Condition Damage) type is best for this build. Toughness gives much needed armor to survive and with Inventions trait line (+300 tougness) you will see the significant decrease at incoming damage numbers. Inventions line also gives +300 healing and I really shocked when I fully restored my health from %20 with just one skill. Use Shield. Shield is heavy and heavy is reliable. That will occur rarely but sometimes you will need its control skills and protection. It also adds 90 toughness with Reinforced Shield trait. I choose Thumper Turret for my last utility skill spot. It has very high health and armor. It will attract mobs and deal aoe damage that can save your time and sometimes your life. There are times that I think it has more health than me when it survives 6-7 risen mob attack. You can also use its knockback skill. It's good for every build. Use it with whatever trait build or weapon set you choose.

Traits Trait lines are obvious choices. There are few crucial traits for this build rest is optional and you can implement whatever trait fits your playstyle.
Forceful Explosives: Larger explosion radius. It's a must trait. You can't miss your grenades or bombs with this trait. It will also help you take bigger mob packs.
Elixir-Infused Bombs: Bombs heal allies. And you. Each bomb will heal you 200ish hp and its huge. You will get non-stop healing while bombing large packs.
Grenadier: You throw extra grenade with each grenade skill and range is increased by %25. Technically it's one free skill for every two skill use. Instead of 2 grenades you will throw 3.
We have not much choice in Inventions line. Elixir-Infused Bombs and Reinforced Shield are therefore no brainer traits. First major trait has no directly useful trait. Every option is equally useful to me so it is up to you to choose. I choose Explosive Descent! Just for fun. %50 less fall damage? Hell yea! In Firearms there are Infused Precision which will keep you at constant swiftness boon and Knee Shot which will cripple immobilized targets. I go with first but again it's up to your choice. By the way Steel-Packed Powder (Explosions cause vulnerability) minor trait is overpowered. After a few explosions your targets will be stacked to max vulnerability which means they will take even more damage.

Combat Try not to waste your bombs and grenades less than 3 melee targets. Pack them, control them and bomb the shit out of them. Yesterday I pulled 10+ Svanir mobs in Far Shiverpeak, including ranged, hunter, berserker mobs and they died in a few seconds while I used supply crate, turret and one healing skill to survive. I've completed a dynamic event with one pull. This might not seem important for some classes but it's huge improvement for an Engineer. All Engineers who died countless times in personal story quests will understand my point. I know Engineers have suffered from risen mobs as well as other classes (except warrior) but fear no more. Chill them, apply conditions and then just spam bombs. They will be sorry that they are not dead. Actually they are the reason that encouraged me to try this build so I have to thank them and I do this by sending their souls to rest.
This is overall build for any leveling or PvE damage focused Engineer. I haven't tried it in dungeon yet but I don't think It will fail me. Grenade kit is also best choice for WvW and in underwater combat as well.

Conclusion I must say that I've never seen any engineer using bomb or grenade focused build but there might be some other people who have already leveled all along with similar build. Please have a discussion here and inform us if you have more useful tips. Although I've discovered all of these after hours of experimenting, this build is new to me and it needs more challenges to be proved as reliable.
I must add a few more things about this build apart from its practical advantages. The most important thing about this build is that you will feel like an Engineer! Seriously, running around with ridiculous sounded funny pistols is not the gameplay I expected from an Engineer. I must feel the impact of my guns, I wanna see blasts and booms and I want to see huge numbers floating on my foe's head. Rifle feels like real weapon but again it's a total joke with its control focused low damage skills. But bombs and grenades are completely different. You will feel the explosions, the rumbling of earth, the sounds... You will feel like you are really destroying something. That's what I was expecting before rolling an Engineer. I'm finally glad to have an Engineer main but I regret that I waited until 70 to try out amazing capacity of Engineer.
Have fun this build.

Edit: Grenades do not benefit from Forceful Explosions so you if you are grenade focused then you should change it. It is still very important for bomb focused play. Shield gives toughness when you wield it. Consider changing Reinforced Shield trait if you won't be using shield too much. (Thanks to nanowizard for info)
Edit 2: Knight armor is the closest stats for this build for now. Power/Precision/Toughness

Tips for those of you just hitting 80

Tips for not being poor and getting on your feet
  1. Don't salvage everything! Blue level 80s can vendor for almost a silver a piece and greens go for about double. Salvaging is useful for obtaining materials that can't be gathered (leather, cloth), but otherwise you'll probably be able to get plenty of crafting materials from nodes. This also has the double value of reducing the amount of salvage kits you're going to need to buy.
  2. You can travel to Lions Arch for free from anywhere by entering the mists, and doing so will save you a lot of silver returning from the Orr areas.
  3. Low level crafting materials you have left over from leveling can actually go for quite a lot on the trading post. Check the prices frequently.
  4. Do World vs World. Contrary to what seems like common opinion, it is not a gold sink. It is incredibly profitable for both gold and karma. You don't even have to spend gold on siege weapons if you don't want to, since they're sold for Badges of Honor on the vendor's second tab. (You receive badges of honor for killing players in WvW and then looting the bag that appears under you).
  5. Follow event chains. The longer you follow a chain, the more players tend to get caught up in the events, the more the events scale up, the more loot you get. Wait around after you finish an event in the later zones. With the exception of defending bases, almost every single event in Orr either has a follow up or is part of a larger chain.
  6. Fast travel as little as possible within the zone itself. Even if you're standing next to the waypoint it'll still cost you around a silver and change.
  7. When using the trading post, don't always just click the 'sell all' or 'buy immediately' buttons. It often pays to list the items for a more reasonable price than people are ordering, or to order for a cheaper price than the item is listed. It'll take longer to see the profits, but you can save a lot of silver.
  8. Explorable dungeons are the opposite of WvW. They are huge moneysinks at the moment, especially with PuGs. If you're hurting for gold, you might want to hold off on them for a little while.
  9. Crafted items are probably the most cost effective rare level 80 armor/weapons. The karma vendors charge a lot and the specific weapons/armor from each of the Orders (Whispers, Vigil, Priory) is quite expensive. Even if you don't have the crafting skill necessary to make the items yourself, you can generally get a good deal if you supply the crafter with the fine crafting components (blood, scales, etc)
  10. Magic find food is cheap and will greatly increase your gold income once you start selling items instead of salvaging them.
  11. If you craft, it pays to use masterwork salvage kits on level 80 rares and exotics you find in Orr. They have a chance at giving a Glob of Ectoplasm which you will use in crafting the highest tier armors/weapons.
  12. The mystic forge is generally not very reliable for upgrades, at least not with random patterns. However, you can use it with dyes, crafting materials, and other such items for a chance at a higher (more expensive) tier.

1-400 Jewel Crafting Guide

UPDATE NOTES 09.09.12

Skills & Traits

Mesmer

  • The Prestige – Fixed a bug so that Burning duration no longer amplifies when additional enemies are present.

Ranger

  • Beastmastery Trait: Instinctual Bond – Now grants 5 seconds of quickness to the player’s pet and can only occur once every 50 seconds.
  • Pets can no longer be revived using the “F” prompt. This is because you can either use F4 to swap pets which will bring that pet back alive or you can wait until you are out of combat at which point you pet will revive automatically. We felt it was doing a disservice to Ranger players to incentivize them to spend a long time reviving their pet when it was a very inefficient thing to do and happened after combat anyway. This will also help clear up “F” to interact functionality.

Guardian

  • Tome of Wrath – Removed Stability, added Retaliation; increased the health of the transform
  • * Zealot’s Fervor – Players can now move while casting this skill; increased cast time to 2 seconds; reduced maximum targets to 5
  • * Judgment – Knockdown is now 3 seconds
  • Tome of Courage – Removed Stability, added Protection
  • * Heal Area – Base heal increased by 33%
  • * Pacifism – Reduced maximum targets to 5; increased cast time to 2 seconds; reduced daze duration to 2 seconds
  • Shield of Absorption. The second half of this skill will now unlock in PvE.

Story

  • “Bad Blood” – Exiting the conversation will no longer arbitrarily lock the player into a choice
  • “Mirror, Mirror” – Adjusted difficulty.
  • “The Hatchery” You can no longer do the final step before doing the intermediate steps.
  • “Dredging up the Past” – Fixed blocking bug during the first step.

General
Fixes for various blocked events and skill challenges.
PvP games played/won will not increment in activities.
Fixes for various map bugs that allowed players to get out of the map.
Interact “F” should use the following priority:
1) Your current selection
2) Loot
3) Revive/Stomp
4) Anything else
Updated the recipe for Superior Rune of the Ranger to match the rarity of other Superior runes.

How To Play PvP: Setup Guide

Controls
  • Set A and D to strafe. Q and E are important buttons to have available for abilities.
  • Rotate the camera with the mouse, and have camera rotation speed on max. When I PvP, I literally always have right click pressed down.
  • Set comfortable keybinds. In order from left to right, I use Ctrl+W, Q, E, R, F, V, Alt+Q, Alt+E, C, Z, for my class abilities I use 1-4, for weapon swapping I click in my mouse wheel, and for stomping/reviving I use G. Remember, though, that you need to find keybinds that work for you and your setup. For example, if I had more buttons on my mouse, I would use those!
  • Consider the fast cast ground targeting, it can really make a difference. I use this myself, too. It’s tough at first to know your ranges, but once you learn them, it effectively halves the delay from casting to using an AoE move.
  • Learn to tab target/assist target! I use Tab for tab targeting (select next enemy) and T for assist targeting. I should probably set a keybind for calling assists too, but I haven't yet.
  • Don't backpedal (walk straight backwards with S) unless you absolutely need to. It is better to strafe away from your opponent.
  • Figure out the fastest and most comfortable way for you to dodge. Dodge rolling is extremely important in every possible PvP situation. Personally I double tap a direction, but many people would recommend using a separate dodge keybind.
Combat Tips
  • Dodge roll a lot! It's practically free and negates an entire ability (or more).
  • Always be moving! You can cast while moving for almost every ability, and you are almost never in the ideal spot for more than half of a second. It’s also helpful because you might move just out of range of an enemy’s melee attack. This could mean dodging 500~1000 damage from an auto attack, or dodging an entire CC spell. It can win fights that would otherwise be impossible.
  • Only one person has to be on a node to capture/neutralize it. More people do not affect the speed at which a point is captured.
  • Bring stunbreakers! They can get you out of a lot of situations.
  • Learn which moves can be used while stunned. There are some really strong moves that can be used while stunned. As an example, off the top of my head the Elementalist’s Shocking Aura (main hand dagger, skill 3 I believe) stuns people that hit you. So you can get bull rushed by a warrior -> use Shocking Aura -> he hits Hundred Blades and stuns himself after the first hit. Another example is Necromancers, they can both switch to Death Shroud (their profession mechanic) AND cast Fear while stunned, allowing them to get out of almost any 1v1 CC chain in the game.
  • Condition damage is not reduced by armor. This means that condition damage is most effective (relative to normal damage) against high armor, low health targets (hi there guardians ;D)
  • Switch weapons a lot, and make sure to use all of your weapon abilities. If most of your moves are on cooldown, chances are switching is a good thing.
  • You can blink on the underside of platforms to teleport on top of them (lightning flash, shadowstep, blink, etc). There are thousands of specific spots on maps that you should try to learn if you run one of these abilities. I’ve seen an Elementalist that was able to get on top of all different kinds of pillars and such and was untouchable while dropping lots of AoEs in the big group fights.
  • When playing a ranged class, learn which abilities are projectiles and be extremely vigilant about projectile reflects. They are a very very powerful mechanic in PvP that gets overlooked a lot, and you can often end up killing yourself if you don’t pay attention to them.
  • Certain skills have a leap forward/backward on them. You can easily use these to go in the other direction, however. What you do is, spin your camera around with LEFT click (this doesn't actually affect your character's movement/facing), then tap RIGHT click (this moves you forwards one step so you're facing the other direction), then hit your ability. Most noticeable with elementalist, either to use Ride the Lightning to run away or to use Updraft to chase.
  • Bring interrupts wherever possible. If you absolutely cannot fit at least one on your utility skills, bring a weapon set that has one. Learn the important moves to interrupt (Elementalists have a lot of long casts, but Pistol Whip on Thieves and Hundred Blades on Warriors are both good examples too). And always be on the lookout for heals. This is pretty easy because…
  • Every single heal in the game makes you glow blue. Watch out for this glow at all times and interrupt it if you can. Always. Even if it doesn’t directly lead to a kill, delaying heals in this way basically adds 5s or more to the cooldown, which is absolutely huge in long fights.
  • Go for secondary map objectives when possible. But remember, some are more important than others. In general, you always want to kill the bosses on Niflhel (and steal the opponents' boss if you can), you almost always want to kill the enemy trebuchet on Khylo, you always want to cap the water point on Capricorn (even though underwater combat sucks, it's by far the most important point to have), and you can kind of ignore the lords on the last map. Only go for the lords if it will give you a win, or if you can't get any points and want to pull enemies away from their points.
  • Heal early. As soon as the heal will get its full or near full amount, use it, because most people will CC you when they try to finish you off.
  • Use all your abilities, especially your long CD ones and elites. If you die with abilities available, you probably made a mistake somewhere!
  • Some abilities don’t have a cast animation, meaning they can be casted during spells. Every class has some I believe, e.g. Mantras for Mesmers, pet abilities, and most if not all signets. Elementalists are the prime example though. In Scepter/Dagger, Elementalists get a move in Earth called “Churning Earth.” This is a very long cast time (5s I believe) for a massive burst of damage that cripples and bleeds in an AoE. Normally, it is practically impossible to get this move off without dying or being interrupted (or having people dodge out). However, because you can cast instant spells while channeling it, you can use certain abilities while waiting for the cast: in Air, you can cast skill 2, Lightning Strike, for extra single target damage, and skill 3, Blinding Flash, to blind a single target. Then, you can use the utility Lightning Flash to teleport on top of an enemy right before the cast finishes, giving them almost no chance to escape it. A situational strategy, but a very fun and cool one that shows off a really complicated mechanic.
Reviving and Stomping
  • People respawn when the timer says XX:18, XX:38, and XX:58. So to get the maximum respawn timer for your opponents when you stomp them, start your stomp at xx:18 and they'll get a 19 second timer. Also, if you're downed and getting stomped at like :20 or :21 (remember it counts down), just let it happen, don't try to delay it or you'll be dead longer.
  • Always revive/stomp someone if you have the chance. It can make a huge difference in the outcome of a fight.
  • Don't revive someone though, if you can kill an enemy and get your teammate to rally.
  • Learn to stomp/revive people properly. If your class has a stealth, stability, or invuln move, you can use those to guarantee your stomp/revive will go off. Some examples are the thief's heal, the mesmer's distortion shatter, the warrior's stability shout, and the engineer's elixir S.
  • Every class has different downed abilities. You should learn all of them, but as a general rule of thumb:
  • Elementalists cannot interrupt you if you stomp them immediately
  • Engineers, Warriors, and Necromancers can interrupt a single person
  • Rangers and Guardians can interrupt in an AoE
  • Thieves and Mesmers can teleport/stealth
  • Specifically against Mesmers, force them to teleport, then attack the mesmer with an icon over its head. This one will NOT be the clone. It should also be the mesmer that appears second, after the clone.
Choosing a Build
  • If you're not much of a theorycrafter, copy a pro's build. You can find lots of people from teams like Paradigm, SuperSquad, and AlphaCollective streaming on twitch.tv, and they should all link to their builds.
  • If you want to make your own build, make sure you choose a focus. Either focus on DPS or support/point holding. Then, if you're DPS, choose to go for crit/power or conditions, and if you're a support, choose to go for tankiness/healing or AoE buffs/debuffs. Try not to spread yourself thin or you won't do anything well enough.
  • Passive tankiness does not work by itself in this game. If you want to be a tank, bring lots of invulns and/or lots of heals.
  • Remember that some tooltips are wrong. For example, the stacking buff runes (that stack to 25) give you 5 per stack on kill or assist, making them extremely potent.
Attitude
  • Don't get angry at any specific individual, ability, class, or map (unless it's Raid on the Capricorn of course). Figure out what you did wrong, and fix it.
  • Always be as helpful as you can. Everyone starts out being new and knowing nothing, so help them out if possible! Contribute to a kind, flourishing community so that Guild Wars 2 can grow into a huge, competitive eSports title.
  • Find a group of friends or a guild that is interested in PvP. Having people to bounce ideas off of and try things out with is never a bad idea, and tournaments can be really fun.
  • Most importantly, have fun with PvP. If you aren't, try new classes or builds until you are. If you don't have fun, playing it will be miserable after a while.
